Need Tips On How to Clean Your Pool? Read On!

For advice, procedures and a how to guide of how to look after your pool yourself please see the hints and tips below.

Of course if you don't have the time or need a little more hands on advice we will be happy to come out and either sign you up for a maintenance contract or take you through how best to look after your pool.

1. Backwashing Filter

 1. Backwashing Filter

Remember ‘never turn Multi Port Valve when pump is ‘ON’

  • Switch pool pump off’.
  • Ensure sump and skimmer valves are open.
  • Select ‘BACKWASH’ on M.P.V.
  • Switch pool pump ‘ON’.
  • Backwash until the sight glass has cleared. (This is typically 1 - 2 minutes)
  • Switch pump ‘OFF’.
  • Select ‘RINSE’ on M.P.V.
  • Switch pump ‘ON’.
  • Rinse for approx. 10 Seconds or until the sight glass is clear.
  • Switch pump ‘off’
  • Select ‘FILTER’ on MPV.
  • Switch pump ‘ON’

After Backwashing the filter it may be necessary to top pool back up to the correct level, this is usually half way up the skimmer throat. THIS WILL EITHER BE DONE AUTOMATICALLY IF YOU HAVE TOP UP FITTED OR BY HOSE PIPE IF NOT.

2. Vacuuming Pool

 2. Vacuuming Pool

  • Net out all floating and submersed large debris with your leaf net.
  • Connect vacuum hose and pole to vacuum head, place vacuum head in water and feed the hose down through the water so as to remove all air from the vacuum hose.
  • Connect vacuum hose to vacuum point using a hose tail fitting if required or if no vacuum point is fitted, remove skimmer lid and plug vacuum hose here.
  •  Switch pool pump ‘OFF’.
  • First open vacuum (or skimmer) valve and then close sump and (or) skimmer valves. (This will give maximum suction to the vacuum.)
  • If pool water is too high, or if you are vacuuming heavy sediment from the floor select ‘WASTE’ on the M.P.V before you commence. (This drains the pool water from the pool and will prevent the filter from blocking. You will however, need to keep a close eye on the water level to stop it dropping too low.)
  • Switch pool pump ‘ON’.
  • Now vacuum the pool with a slow steady movement across the floor and walls as required. (If you are vacuuming to ‘WASTE’ keep an eye on the water level so as not to drain too much water.)
  • Once finished and pool is satisfactorily clean
  • Switch pool pump ‘OFF’.
  • Shut vacuum (or skimmer) valve
  • Open Filter pump lid and empty and clean pump basket.
  • Replace pump basket, fill pump with water, and replace lid. (Making sure the ‘O’ ring seal is clear of any debris.)
  • Open Sump (1/2) and Skimmer (Full) Valves.
  • Switch pool pump ‘on’.
  • Brush pool walls and water line, Tile & Liner cleaner can be used for stains.
3. Chemical Testing

 3. Chemical Testing

After the pool and filter have been cleaned, it is vital to check and adjust your pool’s chemical balance and levels.

Depending on the frequency of use it is a general recommendation that the chlorine and pH level be checked and, if necessary, maintained between:
  • Chlorine: 2 - 3 ppm. (parts per million)
  • pH: As close to 7.5 as possible (usually 7.2 -7.6)

Actions:

  • If chlorine is low add Chlorine Granules. (Follow instructions on container for dilution and mixing according to pool voluum.)
  • If a chlorine/bromine feeder is fitted, top up with fresh tablets. Alternatively, add one or two large chlorine tablets to the skimmer basket. (This depends on the volume of your pool.)
  • If pH is reading high above 7.6, add dry acid (pH Minus/Dry Acid),
  • If below 7.4 add Alkali (pH +).
  • It is also recommended to add the following every week:
  • Filter floc / water clarification tablet (Jolly Gel or Goldifloc) and/or liquid (Sparkle) on a weekly basis.
